According to the Washington Office of Financial Management, Pullman’s June 2011 estimated population is 29,820. As much of the community’s population consists of undergraduate students, the population drops dramatically during the summer months.

The city is built upon 4 major hills with main traffic arterials in the valleys. Pullman is located in Whitman County between Lewiston, Idaho (30 minutes to the south), Spokane, Washington (90 minutes to the north), and Moscow, Idaho (10 minutes east) on the rolling hills of the Palouse.

The city is home to Washington State University, Community Colleges of Spokane Institute for Extended Learning at Gladish and nearby Moscow is home of the University of Idaho.

The Port of Whitman County , Southeast Washington Economic Development Association (SEWEDA) and the Palouse Knowledge Corridor promote business development. The health care needs of the community are served by Pullman Regional Hospital.

Pullman has excellent public schools in School District 267 and other private schools. WSU operates Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum which offers sports and entertainment second to none. The Palouse Discovery Science Center hosts hundreds of school field trips every year and boasts the membership of hundreds of families in and around the quad-cities (Pullman, Moscow, Lewiston, Clarkston) area.

The city operates a transit system (Pullman Transit) providing fixed-route and Dial-A-Ride service throughout Pullman, while a private company operates the Wheatland Express offering Spokane airport and holiday shuttle services, and private scheduled and charter transportation services in the area as well. The city is a partner in the Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport which provides scheduled commercial flights as well as general aviation services.

The city and region are served by several daily newspapers, including The Daily News, which covers Moscow and Pullman, The Lewiston Morning Tribune, The Spokesman-Review, as well as the weekly Whitman County Gazette and student publications at each university, The Daily Evergreen and The Argonaut. The community is served by Neill Public Library as well as multiple libraries at each university.

The Pullman Parks and Recreation Department is a central clearinghouse for many recreational activities throughout the year, and both Whitman County Parks Department and Latah County Parks Department maintain recreational areas as well. WSU has an award-winning 18-hole public golf course, U of I has an 18-hole course in Moscow, and 30 minutes away are two additional 18-hole courses in Lewiston, Idaho, and Clarkston, Washington offering golf throughout the year.
