School Resource Officer
The School Resource Officer (SRO) is a regular patrol officer on special-duty assignment. Assignment to the SRO position is typically a three-year rotation, and requires substantial additional training and certification. The current SRO for the Pullman Police Department is Officer Shane Emerson.
The duties of a School Resource Officer include:
- working as a liaison with the Pullman School District and individual public school administrators
- providing information and assistance to public school students and parents
- investigation of school-related criminal activity
- enforcement of applicable laws
- teaching D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) classes to 5th graders
The SRO also provides crime prevention and educational programs in the community, including informational booths at fairs and festivals, school career day programs, bicycle rodeo programs and child safety identification programs.
