Pedestrian Safety
Page Under Construction
“In 2009, 4,092 pedestrians were killed and an estimated 59,000 were injured in traffic crashes in the United States. On average, a pedestrian was killed every two hours and injured every nine minutes in traffic crashes.” According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/811394.pdf
The Pullman Police Department takes pedestrian safety seriously because collisions involving pedestrians can be very dangerous. The responsibility for pedestrian safety belongs to both pedestrians and drivers.
Washington State Law
- Pedestrians are subject to traffic control signals at intersections and other restrictions.
- Pedestrians must use sidewalks when available and walk against traffic when sidewalks are not available.
- PEDESTRIANS MUST YIELD TO EMERGENCY VEHICLES!
- When crossing the roadway at any point that is not a marked crosswalk, a pedestrian must yield the right of way to all vehicles on the roadway.
- Drivers must exercise “due care” to avoid a collision.
- Drivers may not enter the crosswalk if a pedestrian is in the crosswalk on the same side of the roadway or within one lane of the same side of the road way.
- Pedestrians shall not suddenly leave a curb to enter a crosswalk.
