The Pullman Police Department takes pedestrian safety seriously because collisions involving pedestrians can be very dangerous. The responsibility for pedestrian safety belongs to both pedestrians and drivers.

Washington State Law

• Pedestrians are subject to traffic control signals at intersections and other restrictions. 
• Pedestrians must use sidewalks when available and walk against traffic when sidewalks are not available.   
• PEDESTRIANS MUST YIELD TO EMERGENCY VEHICLES! 
• When crossing the roadway at any point that is not a marked crosswalk, a pedestrian must yield the right of way to all vehicles on the roadway. 
• Drivers must exercise “due care” to avoid a collision. 
• Drivers may not enter the crosswalk if a pedestrian is in the crosswalk on the same side of the roadway or within one lane of the same side of the road way. 
• Pedestrians shall not suddenly leave a curb to enter a crosswalk.
